The Bard's Tale IV is officially coming!!!

Direct source: https://twitter.com/BrianFargo/status/559039453121884160 Search the news for various other statements he has made. One thing he said is that requiring the player to draw their own map may be relegated to "hardcore mode". I hope it's more like Etrian Odyssey, where you get in...

Re: Your thoughts on the state of the genre?

Elminage Gothic is now on Steam. It is a Wizardry-like, which makes it a Bard's Tale-like two degrees removed. In fact I'm not sure how the game gets away with being so similar to Wizardry, although I guess the license must be owned by a Japanese company or something by now.

Re: Your thoughts on the state of the genre?

Well, I see this board is as lively as ever. Aethra's Chronicles , an old DOS game, is pretty good. It's not very similar to the Bard's Tale at all, except for being heavily based on a pen & paper role-playing system, and allowing you to create up to three party members, but if you are able to e...

Etrian Odyssey IV will be out soon... unfortunately, for the Nintendo 3DS only. I have too many electronics in my life as it is, and the only other game for the 3DS that looks interesting is Crimson Shroud. Legend of Grimrock now has Steamworks support, so you can share scenarios with others. Silver...

My personal favorite: Paladin (Geomancer) Hunter Bard Rogue Archmage Archmage Chronomancer Paladins survive instant-death attacks slightly better than Monks. The Hunter is almost guaranteed to get a kill every round in melee, saving the mages some SP. The Bard, Rogue, and mages are of course essenti...

New in 0.0.6: * Holy Book system, which is roughly analagous to the Roman Catholic saints system of Darklands. See the temple for your new holy books. Most encounters should also have their "invoke the power of X" options implemented now, if you have the right books. * Bugfixed using items...

New release 0.0.4:
* Villages - there are more possibilities for what kind kind of a village you find than in Darklands
* Quests - right now, the only quests to see are from the villages

Unmapped - a game I wrote with Bard's-Tale-like combat

http://code.google.com/p/unmapped/ Unmapped is a Darklands-like "role-playing" game with a minimal pure-text interface, powered by the Lanterna GUI library ( http://code.google.com/p/lanterna/ ). The combat is based on The Bard's Tale series. The game has no visual map whatsoever, hence it...

For those who have iOS devices, Silversword RPG is now fully released: http://silversword-rpg.com/ For those who have a Nintendo DS, the Etrian Odyssey series is at 3 games. And for Dungeon Master fans, the Legend of Grimrock continues to make steady progress and seems to have an Ultima-style runic ...

Now on TVTropes

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheBardsTaleTrilogy Hopefully this will help to immortalize the Bard's Tale series. There is decreasing interest in first-person dungeon-crawling games, sadly, except for some niche holdouts such as this site, fans of Daggerfall, and the Etrian Odyssey seri...

Your thoughts on the state of the genre?

How do you guys feel about games like Dark Spire, Etrian Odyssey, etc.?

I haven't gotten much into Dark Spire, but it's mostly Wizardry-based. Etrian Odyssey is pretty nice, and even makes you map your own dungeons using a special in-game graph utility, but I haven't gotten far in that game either.
