Re: Oddity about monster encounters
Well, yeah, the 8-bit versions were/are identical, so that figures. Barring the ZX Spectrum version. I tried playing that for a few minutes once and it was horrible. Half the monster/character portraits seem to be missing -- the Stone Giants, Ogre lords, Golems all use the same portrait that, ironi...

Re: Oddity about monster encounters
An interesting side note is that I believe that "Mandar guard" is supposed to be "Mangar guard". Is this apparent blooper present in the MS DOS version? No, the Dos version fixed it. I believe the Apple IIgs version did as well, but don't quote me on that (it's been a very long ...

Re: Oddity about monster encounters
You are correct about the Dos version. I spent almost all of my time playing the Apple IIe version, where I never once saw hostile Master Wizards. I didn't spend as much time on the Dos version, and jumped to the conclusion when I went monster-hunting for a while and found plenty of friendly ones bu...

Oddity about monster encounters
I have made a spreadsheet of all monsters according to the levels where they are found and discovered an interesting oddity, which I have confirmed on the Apple IIe and DOS versions. I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is true about other versions, at least the C64. Beginning with Sewer...

Re: Brothers Figurine
Ah, so it works properly in combat?
I don't think it ever occurred to me to try it in a fight. I'll have to go back and try it out on the PC and Apple IIe.

Re: Location of Credits in BT2
The PC ports are a travesty. :? I don't disagree with you. But I have to give the PC ports credit -- they came out in the early 1990s, a period after my parents got rid of the Apple IIgs and I lost access to all my old games. I was heading to college then, and I wound up with a PC. Emulation wasn't...

Re: Uh. What?
Interesting. So, is it reproducible? What happens when you walk around? What does the automap show you? Wandering monsters? Did you try heading 4 spaces north and 238 spaces west to see if you actually found the refugee camp?

Brothers Figurine
In the Apple IIe version, the Brothers Figurine summons a Wolf, not a Kringle Bro'. Obviously, a mistake. In the PC version, the Brothers Figurine works properly. Can anyone tell me how the figurine works in the c64 and Amiga versions? I've never played the Amiga version, and on the c64, I don't hav...

Re: Location of Credits in BT2
Nice find! It works on the Apple IIe version, too. Interestingly, if you type '!' while standing in a city or in the wilderness, the game displays the sage's portrait while the credits roll past the text screen. If you are standing in any dungeon, the game displays Kazdek's portrait instead. Does th...

Re: Spell Weirdness
In perhaps a similar vein, ZZGO cannot be cast in the PC version until it has been discovered. So this spell may have another flag with it. Interestingly, I am almost positive that when I originally played this on the Apple 2e, I was able to cast ZZGO prematurely. This is possibly also true on the A...

Fine, so you need 5 rogues, a Chronomancer, and an Archmage. It's still an interesting idea.

Minor oddities and inconsistencies
Due to my enforced isolation because of this pesky virus, I have been wrapping up a few old projects that were sitting around collecting dust in my hard drive. One of them was updating my comprehensive BT1-3 monster lists. I have discovered a few minor oddities, which I wonder if anyone else noticed...

Re: Location of Credits in BT2
Well, I found it in the Apple IIgs version. It is next door to the AG in Tangramayne, to the south. I have hunted for it all over the place in the Apple IIe and MS-DOS versions and never found it. Kroah's Game Reverse Engineering Page (bringerp.free.fr/RE/) displays all the graphics for the Amiga ve...

Re: What are your favorite tips and tricks?
That's interesting. How did you ever find out about that one?
I haven't really played the game from scratch in a long time. Whenever the bug hits me to play some Bard's Tale, I usually just fire it up with my old characters, who can hit just about everything anyway.
