Re: What are your favorite tips and tricks?
I always played the DOS version. My go-to on starting a new party was to hit 'Z' the minute I stepped outside. I always used to recommend this to newcomers, too. Pretty sure this only works on the DOS version, though. (For those who only played other ports, hitting Z anywhere in Skara Brae under DOS...

Re: Party Member Status: DBTC
Sorry to hear that. Hope your health stabilizes. I used to drink tons of sugary crap too (I'm basically immune to coffee, so sugar is almost the only thing I can use keep myself artificially awake). Lately I've been trying to train myself to develop a liking for tea (of various kinds) instead, with ...

Re: Some changes
'Dogcat250' seems to be another spambot (per the deluges in forums 5 and 6).

Re: Nonsense messages in the game?
One level down / map wall and door / look toward the corners / and read the four -- Dark Domain 2 Seek the four cornered letters -- Dark Domain 3 You have to look at the map to see the letters. The walls in the four corners of the map spell the answer. Map of the Dark Domain 3 Oh, for... See...

Re: Nonsense messages in the game?
One level down / map wall and door / look toward the corners / and read the four -- Dark Domain 2 Seek the four cornered letters -- Dark Domain 3 - This is a clue to map out the 3rd dungeon level and find the password to get to the 4th level of the Dark Domain. - As above. Really? I thought the pas...

Re: Nonsense messages in the game?
BT2 does seem to have an unusual number of meaningless clues, I noticed that last time I played through recently. (MS-DOS version.) Besides the ones already mentioned, I've never been able to get any meaning from: One level down / map wall and door / look toward the corners / and read the four -- Da...

Re: Best character for special slot?
What does Thor do, anyway? Low AC, incredibly tough, critically hits and virtually never misses. IIRC he doesn't have a breath weapon, but otherwise he's pretty much a guaranteed one-enemy-kill per round – which is arguably more valuable at the top of the tower when you have individual nasties like...

Re: Best character for special slot?
Way back in the day I used to use a Demon Lord for the special slot once I got high enough level. This was the MS-DOS version, and he did use his breath weapon once in a blue moon, but it was incredibly rare. But yeah, he spent about half the time uselessly trying to summon friends. Last time I play...

Re: BT 3 MSDOS version
With extensive testing and comparison, I've confirmed that my alterations are entirely consistent with the C64 version. (Incidentally, multiple bards in the party can also play different songs in combat now - I suspect this was also not working previously.) Even if the manual claims that bard songs ...

Re: BT 3 MSDOS version
The manual says that only one song can be played at a time and that combat songs only last one round. Hmm, you're right. That's odd, since the C64 version definitely doesn't behave that way. Nor do Bard's Tale I or II for DOS. I wonder if the manual in this case was based on the DOS port behavior? ...

Re: BT 3 MSDOS version
I compared with the C64 version. If I play Bringaround Ballad while exploring, then enter combat, my characters heal every round on C64, but not on DOS. ... Similarly, Rhyme of Duotime played while exploring gives everyone an extra attack if they enter combat... on C64. Not on DOS. I have to play i...

Re: BT 3 MSDOS version
Can I add my profound thanks to drifting for his work? I've been replaying the trilogy for the first time in decades and the patched thiefp.exe is a game-saver. It's actually playable now, which I appreciate tremendously. That said, I did find several more DOS port bugs that I haven't seen mentioned...

Re: Now on TVTropes
FWIW, I've been updating and expanding the above pages on and off as I've been replaying the original trilogy over the summer. I also added a section on BT3 for MS-DOS to the "Porting Disaster" page. The discussions on this forum were very helpful in putting it together, together with my o...
