As mainly ZX Spectrum fan i loaded Spectrum and here is diferences. ZX tape version lacks special gfx for guild and shop buildings when you face it. They are just ordinary blocks when facing it. ZX Spectrum 3+ disk version have that images for buildings. In both versions pics are not animated and y...

Correct, the shadelance is not. The stoneblade, however, should work. I have played both the Apple IIe and C64 versions, and the stoneblade works exactly the way it's supposed to. I have not acquired it in the PC version, so I can't test it there. This could be yet another bug with the items. For ex...

As a bit of an aside, I don't suppose during your treks through the previous two games you found a pattern to how monsters were generated did you? No, not really. I believe it's "random", but the algorithm for generating random events is flawed. This causes you to meet from time to time a...

Monster Listing, work in progress

I've spent many hours working on the monster catalogs for the Bards Tale games. They have always very reliably followed the 16 monsters per level rule (ie, there are exactly 16 different types of monsters that can be randomly encountered on a level, not including "specials" or monsters sum...

I need a thief!

....for the C64 version. It's a pain to build one up from scratch. I've already had to do that for the PC version, and again for Apple II. I'm not up to it again. Somebody have a powerful thief I can "borrow"? Preferably without any quest flags triggered, so I can walk around with him and ...

Very interesting stuff. How/where are the darkness squares stored? Maybe the "mystery byte" has something to do with those? Though it seems to me that info would take a lot more disc space. Are the darkness squares included in the wall map? EDIT: I just had a thought -- maybe that mystery ...

Thanks everyone. Now, to knock off all the BT 3 monsters.....

Actually, it might not be as bad as all that, since there isn't always a new monster listing each and every level, like there is in BT2. Still, there are a lot of levels. Sigh.

Monster Listing

I've generated a comprehensive list of every monster in Bard's Tale II, sorted by portrait. Unlike with BT1, this was very painful to do, since BT2 has a unique set of monsters for every dungeon level in the game. Here are some stats: -481 monsters total -416 are encountered randomly (16/level x26 l...

In one of the other threads around here, it was pointed out that BT1 engine seems to have strict limitations on, for example, the number of spinners a level can have. Do you manage to bypass this, or can we potentially crash the whole thing by trying to put too much extra stuff?

Incompetent fighters

Over the last week, I decided to finally get around to wrapping up two 20-year-old projects: 1) finish the Apple 2 version of BT2 (without cheating), and 2) generate a complete list of BT2 monsters sorted by images, like I did for BT1. I imported a crew that completed BT1, leveled up to the mid-40's...

Yeah, BT3 is pretty hard, even with characters imported from BT2 (they never completed BT2, though, and I didn't have an Archmage with mangar's mallet). I've also been completely disgusted by the business about the corrupted pictures in BT3, and I'm on a quest to find a working disk image for the Ap...

Years ago I started on a project to make some detailed maps of BT2, like I did for BT1. However, I was a bit daunted by the second level of Destiny Stone, because that giant empty area seems to be chock full of "something odd" squares, antimagic areas, spinners, and silent areas, not to me...

It's a good thing I don't know what any of you look like, because otherwise this thread might conjure up some images that I'll need a lot of therapy to get them out of my head. But, yes, I'd like to see an 8-bit BTCS. I've been turning over in my little project over in my head. I want to cre...

Mad God, middle of the list. Near the golems. Did they call him Tarjan in any other versions? On the Nintendo, they call him "Mad Spirit".

There are a few differences between the Apple ][e original and the C64. First, the Apple version is UUUGLY, mostly due to the flourescent color pallette. You think so? I just ran the two versions side-by-side, and I was going to say that about the C64 version. The colors are extremely drab, while t...
