Monster Listing

Now that a few long-standing mysteries have been resolved, here is my definitive list of all monsters in BT1, arranged by the picture used to display them. Mercenary Mercenary Swordsman Bladesman Warrior Elite Maze Master Barbarian Nomad Barbarian (in later versions) Berserker Bone Crusher Samurai S...

Differences between versions

The different threads on this forum have called attention to many significant differences between different versions of the games. Overall, it seems that the BT1 versions can be broadly categorized into first generation (Apple II, Commodore 64, and probably also the ZX Spectrum version, though I've ...

Okay, Darendor and Horpner, do you two have ANY idea how long I've been wondering about those three particular unknowns -- the mystery square in Mangar's Tower, the death denizens, and the liches?!! I've been wondering about that square ever since I hauled myself into the 5th level of the tower, som...

Unfortunately, I have no happy hacked characters for the C64. Any chance someone around here can spare some?

Now that the Mangar Mystery Square has finally been solved, any chance another big mystery of BT1 can be resolved? Specifically, what the Death Denizen is? For years, there has been available a list of all the monsters in the game ripped out of the PC version executable file. Two of the monsters on ...

EXCELLENT! A 20 year-old mystery is finally solved! I'm thrilled! Actually, two 20 year-old mysteries, since we've finally also figured out what the liches look like. So, I did just now some experimentation with the Apple 2 and PC versions of the game, and it seems your theories are all correct. The...

How did you get THAT to happen?!!! First of all, how were you able to APAR to the 5th level of Mangar? Is this something you were able to hack in the game? Secondly, why didn't defeating Mangar teleport you back to the adventurer's guild? Is this something specific to the C64 version of the game? Th...

I always smiled when I encountered 1 Fanskar and 1 A Friend.

Also the graphic they ended up using for the Princess in the Dark Domain made me die laughing.

I don't believe Michael Cranford continued with his "fixed random encounter" method in II that he used in 1. All of the set encounters in II are denoted with "Something special is near..."... However, I think that there's a mechanic at play that flags certain squares as increasi...

Random combat -- you mean one of the random fights that generates a chest? You know, it was a long time before I released that all the "chest" encounters were in fixed locations. At least in BT 1, you get attacked right away in those spots. In BT 2, you sometimes have to walk over a square...

Okay, I'll bite. I can't prove you wrong, though. I can only give you my reason for thinking so. Hopefully, in the near future, we'll have enough information that the whole argument will become moot. To summarize for the rest what you're talking about: on Mangar level 4, there is a special square lo...

Well, there aren't that many. They probably didn't bother with them since almost every light spell makes secret doors irrelevant. If somebody doesn't pony up a readily-available scan, I can probably list their coordinates for you as soon as I have some time to spare. I really should scan my old maps...

Never spotted it on my personal maps. I don't remember if I was playing the Apple 2 or Apple 2gs version. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the PC version, however.

When I was making those, I was pretty obsessive-compulsive about accuracy and details. Doesn't mean they're mistake-free, though.

I also thought that square might have something to do with the shapes. However, I have tried walking over it without a complete set, and also when I wasn't carrying any of them, and nothing special happened. I've even tried crossing the square after dropping all of my characters' equipment, and stil...

You're wasting your time by using MIBL. Your best bet is the DEST spell. Instant death for one monster, and it hardly ever fails to work. The fight starts with mangar, 2 demon lords, and 3 vampire lords. Mangar almost always summons another demon lord on his turn, so you basically have to fight 3. Y...
