I agree with Darendor about the pureblade. You won't find a better weapon for a Paladin until more than half-way through BT2. The crystal sword might be close, though. Well, yes and no. In BT1, paladins cannot equip the Spectre Snare. In BT2, they can. So the Spectre Snare is the best weapon for th...

I would recommend bringing in your old characters into Bards Tale 2. BT2 was designed to accomodate powerful characters from BT1. The "starter dungeon" in BT2 is irrelevant to the rest of the game, but it serves to bring new characters to a high enough level that they can proceed with the ...

Oh, I didn't notice there were no traps. Still, very nice maps. The special squares were a major problem with my BT 2 map sets. In BT 1, there weren't that many "specials" -- darkness, spinners, traps, antimagic zones, HP drains, and the occasional "smoke in your eyes" spots. Ver...

I noticed that years ago. I've never been able to get into that square. However, it presumably doesn't contain anything other than a HP or MP leech zone, since a message or special encounter would have been flagged as "something special".

Very nice! There are tons of decent Bard's Tale I maps floating around on the internet, but thorough maps with the kind of attention to detail you're paying are not available for Destiny Knight, to say nothing of Thief of Fate. I started a super-detailed set of maps for BT 2 myself decades ago, but ...

I had a bit of a brainstorm... Notice how this square only has the drive run when you walk onto it from the north and not the south? Well it seems to me that the game is checking the party for something acquired after you've gone over this square. (*SNIP*) I had not noticed that. Last time I played...

Is this true? I tried walking over that square hundreds of times on the Apple version and never encountered anything. I heard that once before about the Liches, but was never able to reproduce this.

One thing that hopefully won't be too hard to figure out is how the game calls for the fixed monster encounters. In places like the catacombs, there are fights with 99 zombies and skeletons and what not -- I would imagine these locations aren't too hard to find in the source code. (how often would t...

I would agree. BTCS will probably go down as my single biggest disappointment in my long history of computer gaming. It wasn't so much because BTCS was bad, but more because I had such high expectations of what I would be able to do with it based on the previous 3 games. To say nothing of the horrib...

I concur with the locations of your "UNKNOWN" squares on the 2nd level of the sewers, 3rd level of Harkyn's castle, and 5th level of Mangar's tower. Back in the old days when I was mapping Bard's Tale 1, I spent a long time trying to figure out what these squares showing up on my SOSI spel...

C64 version question

I'm planning on firing up Thief of Fate again, except this time I'd like to play the C64 version on emulator. In the past I have played the Apple II version, but every version I have found seems to have a lot of corrupted monster pictures. My question is this: do any of the C64 versions have problem...

I finished this the other day. I'm curious to know what other people thought of this game. I didn't think it was bad, although the dungeons are a little sparse on the interesting details, messages, etc. In terms of numbers of levels, there were almost as many as in the original game. There was one s...

Go to the BT3 section here http://www.bardstale.de There is a section on maps. It's not entirely complete, and it's difficult to see, but hopefully it helps. One of these days I'll dig through my storage and get all my maps out. They should still be in good condition, and if so I"ll put them o...

In DOSbox, you can set the A drive to be your BT1 folder. For example: mount a: c:\games\dosgames\bt\ Then, BT2 will see it. Warning: some things that formerly could be equipped in BT1 are unequippable in BT2, such as Wargloves for the bard. However, there are some things unequippable in BT1 that w...
