Bard Sword works exploring but not in combat (c64)
In Bard's Tale 2: My bard weilding a Bard Sword seems to be able to play an unlimited number of bard songs while not in combat. This is just like Bard's Tale 1. HOWEVER: in combat, he eventually runs into a limit where he has "lost his voice". I suspect this is the one-per-level limit from...

Spells hit 2x as far as distances in manual (user error)
Has anyone noticed that the spell distances in the manual do not seem to match the game, at least for the c64 version? So far I've discovered: War Strike - Documented to hit distances of 20' hits 30' (I think only 30') Shock Sphere - Documented to hit 20', hits 40' ! Mind Blade - Documented to hit 3...

Aha! I assume the link here http://vice-emu.sourceforge.net/index.html#Related%20Resources works with all recent released WinVice versions. it seems there's support for building against ffmpeg on both linux and mac as well, if you're willing to do the build yourself or if your distribution provides ...

Poking at the C64 save format
Some *very* trivial investigation on my part trying to edit my characters to bring my amiga BT1 characters to c64 BT2. I found the layout looks overall similar to BT1, starting with the name for 16 bytes, 0xFF padded. However, the name is xored with a rolling value, beginning with 0x7f, decreasing b...

Vice has a 'record history' feature which records the memory and system state and then records all the user input from this point. This should allow replay at a later point within Vice, assuming nothing changes too much. The file stored has a memory dump followed by all the input. Optionally the rec...

Tips for getting the IIgs version of Destiny Knight running
I struggled to get the IIgs version of Bard's Tale 2 working right recently. A collection of links or anything on the topic with Bard's Tale specific notes would be welcome. Personally I found that Kegs was mostly unmaintained and on Sweet 16 (I'm on a Mac at the moment) the game had all kinds of un...

Just tested the Commodore 64 version of The Destiny Knight, where the Rhyme of Duotime does *not* regenerate spellpoints at night, nor does it in the dungeons. It seems to multiply the base rate x2, so make regeneration faster during the day. I'll test spell zones soon. Yeah it works (again in bt2) ...
