The AD&D system just gets worse as you level up. That means, for me, that I like Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Champions of Krynn best of the Gold Box games. Unfortunately, Pool and Curse have a terrible spell-memorizing system, so I can't bear to play them any more. Death Knig...

Wait... I thought you had written Champions of Krynn. I love that game. But Death Knights of Krynn sucks. Good riddance!

Which version are you playing? I only ever played it on the Amiga, and never had much trouble. There are a few tough combats, but you shouldn't be having that much trouble with it.

What's in your party? Do you have the Adventurers Journal handy?

Frickin' hard!

So I've decided to try starting out fresh on the C64 version. The lowbie's life is hard in this game. The first level of the Catacombs contains some truly annoying monsters when I'm only fifth level. A Dark Priest is a recipe for pain. I can see that taking out Brilhasti Ap Tarj is going to take som...

I have one more question.

So... the Sage is Lagoth Zanta. WTF?!? Sure, the Sage is a money-grubbing jerk, but why does he do any of the crap he does? Just for his own amusement?

Maybe he was a suicide, and creating this quest for my party to solve was his Ultimate Kevorkian machine.

Hey, Marco. You're getting a couple of different areas confused, I think. On the first level, there's a large, square-ish area in the south-east that's full of every kind of cruddy dungeon feature imaginable. The only help is that it's not dark. Even so, it takes a long time to map, and I despaired ...

The Destiny Stone and Lagoth Zanta

My party has finished mapping The Destiny Stone, solving the last Puzzle Snare and finally defeated Lagoth Zanta and his 60 ridiculously overpowered Balder Guards. They never counted on the ridiculously overpowered Destiny Knight! The last dungeon is quite easy compared to the previous one. One of t...

No, this is preparatory work. Python is a good language for prototypes, and I wanted a program to read the dungeons so I could "prove" the reverse engineering as I went along. A computer program is much easier to write, for me, than a specification. The next step is to hope that the specia...

I'll see if I can hunt this down. It sounds like quite a different experience from the other Bard's Tale games. Is this the only one that ever appeared on the NES?

We have 256 characters to work with, but we want to leave at least some for displaying text, right? So we cannot display all 256 possible configurations of walls/doors/secret/doors if we try to cram all that information into one byte. Moreover, if we've used up most of the characters just for walls ...

There are 255 of them, plus one for the vacant tile. That's a ton of work!

How many do you have done already?

You have snow in winter 'cause you're in Canada.

I have it because I'm in Vermont.

Why the heck do we live in these place?
