Well, I tried the single Monk strategy again, but with a different twist. Instead of creating with max Strength and Constitution, I created a Hobbit Monk and made sure he had max Dexterity and Luck. My beginning parties only tend to die when I meet a group of baddies too mean and too many for me, an...

Re: Leveling strategy
Bytesmythe, I am trying to get your strategy to work. Here's where I'm getting stuck: 3) Wander around town picking up exp from random encounters. Level as soon as you can to keep your AC dropping. The 17 CON will soon get boosted to 18 and you'll rack up extra HP as well. Is there a trick to this? ...

Well, there's only one byte in the save file that is specific to Rogues. However, I couldn't get it to give me consistent results with anything I tried. Hiding it shadows? Always works unless my Rogue is the only one in the party left alive. Then it never works. I couldn't figure out a way to get th...

I have one magician and two conjurers. I am thinking about making one of the conj's into a wizard and the other into a magician. The magician into a conj and go from there. leveling them all up to get all four magic schools among the group. I don't think you can do a Wizard directly from a Conjurer...

Has anybody done a serious study of how the game generates your characters? I ask because it appears to vary enormously between versions. Yes. Check This thread for specifics on MSDOS. For the attributes, there is a base value for each race. Then they throw two 7-sided dice, pick the higher of the ...

Thanks, Drifting. This is great stuff. Things I'm not so sure about: Lightwand - use effect? Dayblade - use effect? Thief Dagger - eqipped effect? Heal Harp - use effect? Galt's Flute - use effect? Powerstaff - use effect? Speedboots Pipes of Pan - use effect? Deathring? Deathring casts Animate Dead...

Thanks for that data, Drifting. I have been wondering about some of those special attack spells forever. So THAT'S what that conjurer was casting. I saw it cast a spell, but I couldn't see that it made any difference. :) One thing... the damage on some of those breath attacks might not be correct. P...

Rogues
Things I'm seeing testing a Rogue There is a byte in the save file that is non-zero only for Rogues. It might have some effect on the percentage of times you get the "Disarm Failed!" message when disarming a trap. As opposed to actually setting off the trap. But it might be the level of th...

Here's another interesting strategy we could use now that we know what determines who strikes first... It's a minor inconvenience that my Monk always hits before my casters and Bard. Sometimes their area effect spells leave a monster or two wounded but not dead. If the Monk hits first, he always kil...

MSDOS Version Bugs
When adventuring at night in Skara Brae, you meet tougher monsters and get better booty then in the daytime. Unless you drop into the Catacombs for a second (like, to play a song), and come back out. It's still night, and you can't go visit Garth or the Review Board, and you don't regenerate Spell P...

The lead character was the first one Withered. This particular party had Monks in the first 3 slots. The first two were level 6 and the third one was level 4. The first one had 18 Luck and the other two had 17 Luck. My calculations showed the first Monk should be immune, Monk 2 should fail the save ...

Thank you, Drifting, for looking up these little details. I don't know why this is so much fun for me, but I really like knowing exactly how these things work. So messing around with some beginner parties and trying some new strategies, a lot of those numbers are confirmed. I can create a Magician o...
