Portal not working?

I'm trying to use the portal in Unterbrae to get to Brilhasti, but nothing happens, when I stand on it. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

You need a magic carpet, or a levitate spell. Then hit the E key to ascend, or the W key to descend through the portal

I played the original on Amiga, but that's more than 15 years ago xD
