A New Tale - Fan Project
A New Tale - Fan Project
Finally I finished my new Bard's Tale story which is based on the Destiny Knight engine.
Many bugs from the original game, or from the version I had, were fixed:
- item-zot is working now
- monsters in the party can cast, breath and launch ranged attacks now
- enemy monsters can now cast spells like INVI, OGST...
- the already implemented 'cheating protection' was improved (better don't touch your character values)
- and some more
Some spells were changed:
Magician:
SASP => RAGE (increase the 'chance to hit' and damage of the whole party)
Sorcerer:
ZZGO => STON (stone to flesh)
Wizard:
SUEL => SUDE (creates a Zombie)
GATE => SUPH (creates a Wraith)
PRSU => LESU (calls a Lesser Demon)
GRSU => PRSU (calls a Demon)
HERB => GRSU (calls a Greater Demon)
Archmage:
BRKR => DELO (calls a Demon Lord)
- 22 new dungeon levels in 7 dungeons
- mixed grafics (BT1 and BT2)
Monsters and Illusions can't be saved in the Rooster.
The story, for sure, is very flat: find out what's going on and kill the final antagonist.
Have fun and feel back in the 80s, without any available maps and riddle solutions.
All needed files are in the two zip-files below.

Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
Tree dragons in the city? Way to wipe out a level 1 party 10 minutes after starting the game.
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
The monster "Gargyle" should probably be "Gargoyle".
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
So the game literally hung during a fight with 3 Conjurors.
The game was trying to load the picture of the "Wolf" after the conjurors were all dead, and the drive is stuck hunting track 34 sector 0 and the entire thing is frozen.

These dragons sometimes fly over the city walls to attack residents and adventurers. They are the strongest monsters in the wilderness/ city, but they are loners.Tree dragons in the city? Way to wipe out a level 1 party 10 minutes after starting the game.
You're completely right. But in the dialect of the citizens of the realm they are called 'Gargyles' (for sure a typo, thanks for finding this). The monster "Gargyle" should probably be "Gargoyle".
Ok, I played through this game twice and had more than 2000 fights, but never had this issue. Track 34 is correct for the wolf picture, but it should be sector 16. Since I haven't touched the loading routine, I guess this was a problem with Vice. I also had 3-4 crashes, also with the BT2 original game, in the past while loading dungeon gfx. The value 0 for the sector indicates that maybe the former value was lost. Please let me know when this happens again. And it was very good from your side to check the track and sector. Thanks a lot!The game was trying to load the picture of the "Wolf" after the conjurors were all dead, and the drive is stuck hunting track 34 sector 0 and the entire thing is frozen.
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
Okay, yes or no question here: Is the password for the prison found in Mergon's Tower?
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
Bizarrely, the "Sax" item appears usable by Hunters...
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
You mean the password at the forest entrance? This can be found partly in the tower and partly in the ancient ruins (in the south of the forest; I placed a hint at Tower2 21/21). So there are two ways to enter the forest.Okay, yes or no question here: Is the password for the prison found in Mergon's Tower?
The sax is a kind of dagger or short sword which can be thrown by warriors, rouges, bards, hunters and monks. Range: 30; Damage: 7-28Bizarrely, the "Sax" item appears usable by Hunters...
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
I thought the sax was short for saxophone, as in the musical instrument.
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
Oh, and the hint at 21N 21E on the 2nd level of the tower has "runin"; it's supposed to be "ruin" or maybe "ruins".
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
Defeating the 4 goblin guards at the forest entrance (password? Pft, stand aside MFers) should clear the encounter completely, not just have them respawn a step later.

Thanks for finding this typo. I assume I made a lot of them...Oh, and the hint at 21N 21E on the 2nd level of the tower has "runin"; it's supposed to be "ruin" or maybe "ruins".
I thought about that. But in BT1 the statues (grey dragon, golem...) also don't disappear. And there are so many goblin guards in the forrest, so they can reinforce very quickly.Defeating the 4 goblin guards at the forest entrance (password? Pft, stand aside MFers) should clear the encounter completely, not just have them respawn a step later.
Do you already know the password? Maybe it's too hard to find out? But you can not find it out unless you have visited the ancient ruins...
In general the riddles are more difficult than in BT1 but not so difficult as in BT2.
Re: A New Tale - Fan Project
The password isn't very obvious (at least to me); I simply guessed at it and got it right.
The general direction of the plot seems a bit vague, but I haven't explored the game past the Prison yet....
