Secret door maps...
Secret door maps...
Does anyone have a comprehensive map set of the dungeons in TOTU that show all secret doors?
Well, there aren't that many. They probably didn't bother with them since almost every light spell makes secret doors irrelevant. If somebody doesn't pony up a readily-available scan, I can probably list their coordinates for you as soon as I have some time to spare.
I really should scan my old maps one of these days. Unfortunately, they're in pencil.
Marco.

If you really plan to scan those hand-made maps, please provide them to me as well. I will then include them into the Adventurers' Guild datapool.Marco wrote:I really should scan my old maps one of these days. Unfortunately, they're in pencil.
And of course you would make an BT player of the very first hour (like me) especially happy!
The sudden scream of battle brings your party to a halt....

Secret door maps incoming, in ascii. One message per dungeon.
Obviously, do not read below if you don't want spoilers.
The map reader looks at only the northern and eastern edges of every map tile, so keep that in mind if you think you see mistakes. They are due to the lack of handling for the two-way connections.

Death and drek? WTF?
Here they all are. You can hopefully guess the proper level and dungeon from the file names. This is auto-generated from examining Vice snapshots, so the accuracy is good. Given below is a list of Vice snapshots containing the dungeon levels, and below each file name is a list of all the secret doors on that level, if any.
The "MOST SECRET" level seems to be, oddly, the third level of Mangar's Tower. I guess they were trying to "get" players who skimp on good light spells in the many, tiny non-darkness areas.
Note that I included the door-swapped version of Mangar's Tower Level Four as mangar4a.vsf.

Death and drek? WTF?
Here's an interesting factoid.
The small room containing the portal up on the 2nd level of Harkyn's Castle has a special text saying: "Something is not quite right here..." (20N, 18E.)
On the Amiga version (and on the Apple ][e version), there are one-way walls here--the only examples in BT1. However, the C64 version doesn't have them. So in other words, everything is quite right here--though I suppose it's wrong for the walls to be quite right. The C64 porter must have overzealously removed this small feature, thinking it was a bug.

Where are the one-way walls, exactly?Horpner wrote:Here's an interesting factoid.

I've got to retract some of what I said above.
The original Apple ][e version of the game doesn't contain one-way walls here, either.
And the Amiga version has... something weird happening, but it's not exactly one-way walls. There are a couple of "phantom" walls, that appear from certain angles, but don't actually seem to exist.
Here's what the room looks like. "s5" is the location of the special message, and {} is the portal up.
Now, when playing on the Amiga, there appear to be one-way walls as notated below:
But you can see them only from certain angles. You have to be in the bottom left corner facing north to see one of them, and the other is only visible when standing in the top left corner or in the top center, facing east.
It must be something peculiar to the Amiga version's map storage system. Maybe the other 16-bit versions exhibit the same strange thing.
In any case, this must be an enhancement to the Amiga version, rather than a bug in any 8-bit version, since the original Apple version doesn't do it. So we still don't know what the strange thing that's going on is supposed to be.
