Monster Listing

I've generated a comprehensive list of every monster in Bard's Tale II, sorted by portrait. Unlike with BT1, this was very painful to do, since BT2 has a unique set of monsters for every dungeon level in the game. Here are some stats:

-481 monsters total
-416 are encountered randomly (16/level x26 levels including cities/wilderness)
-46 monsters are encountered as "specials"
-4 of these 46 you never face in combat since you are never given the option of fighting them (Rock, Paper, Scissor, and Zen Master)
-19 monsters can only be summoned
-4 of these 19 only come from figurines and thus you never face them in combat (Bulldozer, Blast Dragon, Molten Man, Vanquisher)
-4 of these 19 are only found as illusions (Ninja, Samson, Storm Giant, and Red Dragon)
-1 is both illusionary and summoned (Ogre)
-1 is both illusionary and comes from a figurine -- ie, you will only ever face the illusionary version (Master Mage)
-52 monsters reuse the same name and portrait (however, they have different AC, hit points, damage, abilities, etc)
-10 additional monsters reuse the same name but have different portraits
-1 of these 10 has a different spelling (Sorcerer in the cities vs. Sorceror in Dargoth's Tower level 1)
-1 of these 10 was renamed in the 16-bit versions (in the 8-bit versions you encounter Dark Mages both The Tombs level 3 and Oscon's Fortress level 2; however, in the 16-bit versions, Dark Mages in The Tombs are renamed to Evil Mages)
-In the snare in Dargoth's Tower level 5, you are attacked by a Living Statue for answering the riddle incorrectly in the 8-bit versions. In the 16-bit versions, you are not attacked, and the Living Statue monster doesn't exist. However, in the same snare, but a different location, you encounter 2 Web Dragons. Web Dragons do not exist in the 8-bit versions.
-There are 30 portraits total
-In the 8-bit versions of the game, 11 were recycled from BT1
-1 portrait is actually blank (for the Wall)
-2 portraits are used for only one monster each (Lagoth Zanta, and the Scarlet Bard)
-In the PC version, one portrait is missing -- one of the two portraits used for the various living statues and golems. All these creatures just use the same portrait. However, in the Apple 2gs version, the second statue portrait does exist. I don't know about the other 16-bit versions.

I'll be happy to provide this list on request -- maybe our webmaster will post it?

Thanks everyone. Now, to knock off all the BT 3 monsters.....

Actually, it might not be as bad as all that, since there isn't always a new monster listing each and every level, like there is in BT2. Still, there are a lot of levels. Sigh.

Marco.
