Re: C64 BT1 stats save format
Hey, Darendor. It turns out the last bitifled that contained initial HP is just ignored when it gets changed--I'm not sure why it got encoded there in the first place. HP and SpPt appear to be 16-bit values stared lower down. The padding pits are the little zeros interspersed within the stat bitfiel...

C64 BT1 stats save format
I wasn't able to find information on hacking my stats on this forum or elsewhere, so I decided to figure it out. If this info is already known and I just couldn't find it, then it can live here. For me. The stats (and for some reason the starting HP) seem to be stored in 8 bytes, broken into five-bi...

if we are talking about the C64 versions, just forget that checksum. Although it is created by a routine in the guild event, it is never used for anything later (afaik). I can send anyone the disassembled guild event of the disk version, just pm me an email addy. I've been making a little use of so...

Once you crack level 2 and upgrade your armor and weapons things get a lot easier. I do powerlevel my characters by smiting the stone samurai's and later the stone golems, and stone giants. To get to level 2, it helps to have high dexterity and to hang around near the Adventurers Guild. As soon as y...

One more thing before I move on from this thread. I must give a mea culpa to the game engine of The Bard's Tale. In my comments about Bard's Tale 2 I was convinced that the game couldn't provide a challenging boss battle. Grillpasty fat Lard has proven that theory incorrect. Not only is the battle d...

I really hope that level 13 isn't the limit, because I'm incredulous of the ability of a level 12 party to defeat Brilhasti. Anybody care to try? Some studying of memory dumps shows that $fe72 probably contains the quest-tracking flag (for the first character at least). It starts as 0000, and change...

OK, I've proven my theory about the summoned monster breaking the Brilhasti quest. If a Molten Man is in the party, you can enter with a brand new character and the Old Man will give you the Arboria quest, effectively locking you out of the reward for defeating Brilhasti. Now I have to figure out to...

Hah! I've killed Brilhasti ap Tarj fair and square. I will offer that FEAR and FRFO spells sped things up considerably (after the Dark Guards were dead), since my rogue stopped missing after those spells were applied. EDIT: FEAR and FRFO did nothing. Further trials revealed that OGST was the real wi...

I've got to retract most of my whinging from this thread. My problem was being accustomed to the pacing of the last half of Bards' Tale 2. Though I thought it was impossible, my party did eventually become strong enough to tackle the monsters on the third level of UnterBrae. The designers might have...
